We've been pretty quiet lately, enjoying some time off after a very busy first half of the year. Unfortunately for my blog this means spending a lot of time doing very unblog-worthy activities. These include but are not limited to; reading an endless list of Star Wars novels back-to-back; sleeping until the early afternoon; and watching the entire first season of Orphan Black in one sitting (seriously good show!).
We do, however, occasionally head outside into the big wide world to see stuff. Some days this is only as far as Wimbledon to grab a coffee and - in yesterday's case- buy a Lego Snow Speeder.

Other days we go for things a little more cultured, a touch more sophisticated, not so childishly geeky. While we showed Anne around on Tuesday we visited all of the major attractions, this naturally has to include Trafalgar Square.
While at Trafalgar Square I wanted to swing by and take a look at a little-known feature that I'd missed on my previous visits.

It's not difficult to see why I might miss this inconspicuous little black door set into the South-East corner of the square, particularly in the context of the National Gallery, the Four Plinths, and Lord Nelson's Column. But as it turns out, this particular little black door fits right into the category of 'obscure and pointless things that David finds really interesting'. This little black door effectively converted the southeast pillar of Trafalgar Square from innocuous-lump-of-concrete to London's-smallest-Police-station. |
Trafalgar Square's proximity to Downing Street, the Cabinet War-rooms, Westminster and all number of Government centres has meant that, historically, civil unrest has had a tendency to culminate in and around the square.
This Police station was drafted into the plans in order to provide Police with a safe observation point to keep an eye on protests and the like.
